Eagle River, Wisconsin pushed around Saint Mary of the Snows, an Anglican congregation, when they needed zoning permission to buy a building for worship. Condition imposed: Agree to pay the real estate taxes Eagle River would have received, and we will give you “Special Permission” to locate your church there. Well, after a couple of years, the leaders of Saint Mary of the Snows got fed up with the extra cost from illegal discrimination. They called M&B, which researched the issues, obtained Alliance Defending Freedom grant for financial support, and wrote a detailed brief for the City Council which explained the law and the possibilities of litigation.
Eagle River relented and cancelled the payment contract. Praise the Lord, no lawsuit needed!
